Great post. I can see several parallels between homlessness and the environmental issue: both are relatively ignored until it becomes a matter of personal stakes; both are considered “someone else's problem.”
The problem, in both cases, is making people care when it doesn't directly affect them. Easier said than done, but important nonetheless.
Anyway, sounds like you had an extremely intense spring break. I visit DC often for work and can't imagine how hard it would be to spend nights on those streets.
People in that situation can't afford to be environmentalists, but that's why those of us fortunate enough to live in “luxury” have all the more obligation to live responsibly.
