The straight forward part of the image is the pipe leading to its owner which is such a powerful element in the composition, aided by that shadow. The parts of the image that are revealed by exploration are what holds my attention.
The parent helping the child down the kerb is an added human interest. The piles of wood, pollarded tress, pots of flowers and best of all for the engineer in me is the gravel filled gutter. Oh dear I just made a list…………………

The East River in New York may not be home to giant squid or lurking sea monsters, but it still holds a lot to be discovered. Architects and environmentalists from the city have developed a real-time interface with the East River in order to find out more about it and its inhabitants.

Amphibious Architecture is a collaborative effort from the lab at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, architecture firm The Living and the Environmental Health Clinic at NYU. It’s a project that involves a network of floating tubes in the river, which place sensors below the water and lights above the surface. These sensors monitor water quality, presence of fish and human interest in the environment, providing information which the lights react to in real time. It’s the latest effort from the Living Architecture Lab, which explores new technologies in architecture and ways to use them to improve public spaces.
