Hong Kong has often been regarded as the most important part of China. Hong Kong is known to be entrepreneurial, independent, and one of the world’s freest societies. In the last 20 years, Mainland China has been continuously improving with the opening up of their markets. Even though they are so different, Hong Kong and China learn from each other, influence each other, and depend on each other. Hong Kong faces tough competition as Mainland China becomes more business friendly and continues relaxing their investment rules. As a consequence, more companies will want to operate directly in the mainland instead of in Hong Kong.

Many people predict that Hong Kong will go down as Mainland China rises up. There have been many doubts about Hong Kong in the past, such as when FORTUNE magazine incorrectly predicted Hong Kong’s death with the handover to China. But time and again, Hong Kong has proved its resiliency, such as with their quick recovery from the crippling Asian financial crisis.

Many Hong Kong people are wary, because Mainland China is a competitor to Hong Kong as well as a partner, which is why the article mentioned their partnership as being a double edged sword. Because Mainland China has lower labor costs, they take jobs away from Hong Kong’s manufacturing sector. Mainland China is also opening new harbors that will take away jobs from Hong Kong’s services sector, which Hong Kong relies heavily upon.

Although Hong Kong is doing well on its own right now, the Hong Kong government has realized the importance of integrating with mainland China. Hong Kong is lucky to be a part of China at this time when they are booming, because it will almost guarantee that Hong Kong will stay prosperous. Hong Kong has the ability to use China’s manufacturing capability and turn it into a worldwide system for distributing their products. Mainland China and Hong Kong can work together to adjust their industries and promote sustained and steady development. Joint prosperity is possible if they strengthen the investment and trade cooperation between Hong Kong and Mainland China.
