Hot News » Space Shuttle Landing Today @ 10:24 am #

[...] Space Shuttle Challenger (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-099) was NASA's second Space Shuttle orbiter to be put into service, Columbia being the first. Its maiden flight was on April 4, 1983, and it completed nine missions before breaking apart 73 seconds after the launch of its tenth mission, STS-51-L on January 28, 1986, resulting in the death of all seven crew members. (For more on the Challenger disaster, see Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.) The accident led to a two-and-a-half year grounding of the shuttle fleet, with missions resuming in 1988 with the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-26. Challenger herself was replaced by the Space Shuttle Endeavour, which first launched in 1992. HistoryChallenger was nSLA after HMS Challenger, a British corvette which carried out a pioneering global marine research expedition in 1870. ConstructionThe shuttle was built with a body frame (STA-099) which was originally built as a test article. STA-099 was not originally intended for spaceflight, but NASA has revealed that recycling would be less expensive than the redevelopment of the prototype orbiter Enterprise (OV-101) for spaceworthy as originally planned.Challenger (and the orbiters built after it) have fewer tiles in its thermal protection system of Columbia. Most of the tiles on the payload doors, the upper surface of the wing and rear fuselage were replaced by the white surface DuPont Nomex felt insulation. This change has allowed for Challenger 2500 lb (1100 kg) of payload over Columbia. Challenger was also the first orbiter to have a head-up display system for use in the descent phase of the mission. Flights and modificationsAfter its first flight, Challenger quickly became the mode of the NASA Space Shuttle fleet, many more missions per year flight from Colombia. In 1983 and 1984, Challenger flew 85% of all shuttle missions. Even when the orbiters Discovery and Atlantis joined the fleet, Challenger remained in heavy use of three missions per year from 1983-85. Challenger, with the discovery, was amended at the Kennedy Space Center to carry the Centaur-G upper stage in its payload bay.
