Yes that is true. Actually I included that information on another article but forgot to include it in this post.
The Ash Wednesday fires in 1980 and in 1983 were both on the Wednesday of the first day of lent. However I still think the media hype has caused the public to believe that Ash Wednesday is all about fires (sorry I don't have much respect for media after the Vic fires) when the original meaning of Ash Wednesday had nothing to do with fires (except for the burning of palm leaves from the previous Palm Sunday procession).
So there are two different dates for Ash Wednesday in the same calendar year generally. That is, the anniversary of the 1983 fires ( Ash Wednesday) and the first day of lent (Ash Wednesday 47 days before Easter Sunday – different date every year depending on the lunar cycle))
