Are Southern Alps ski resorts ready for winter?

Keep something in mind here (Anthony correct if needed) — the CRN1/2 station analysis is a “good” thing, but only a start. It still doesn't take into account station moves which effects are buried in the records. A CRN1/2 may have been CRN5 in its previous location.

Until station move effects are quantified on each station record, it's still not the true, unbiased temp history — unless the station had no moves.

Nice to see you managed to fit in some serious business analysis even on holiday! I think a lot of ski resorts would identify with the problems you mention – the last couple of years have been really bad for snow as far afield as Austria, France and the US. Global warning doesn't seen to respect national borders. I'm gonna post another link to your blog at Who knows – maybe one day there'll be an MBA in snow management or something similar.

mera- I'm guessing he WAS wearing a hat but took it off. A lot of toddlers that age dislike wearing hats. Also, it says this place is in California, so it probably isn't all that cold. There DOES appear to be snow on the ground, but my guess is that most, if not all, of it is fake snow (ski resorts often use fake snow to insure that they always have enough snow for skiing and such).

Hi Marc-Oliver – thanks for your interest in the process. As I mentioned above, I pulled the top ski resorts from Skiing and Outside magazines which resulted in a list of 37 North American ski resorts. I then combed through all the the major social networking sites & the ski resorts' websites to understand the each resorts' social media efforts. In addition to numbers, I looked at the quality of engagement e.g.Whistler is great at engaging the community with posts & questions & responding to fans whereas Aspen/Snowmass has a very active fan base but is fairly unprompted by Aspen who mainly posts news & announcements. I also looked at the activity on iPhone apps & took note of unique/creative ways resorts were engaging with their communities. Hope that's useful!

There are some smaller resorts doing great things as well and we'll be looking at their activities.
