Wakefield Xmas Craft Fair
Occasion on 2011-11-05 00:00:00
The Wakefield Xmas Craft Fair is an yearly celebration held in early November in collaboration with Ski Vorlage. It requires place on Saturday and Sunday from ten a.m. to four p.m. in the Chalet of Ski Vorlage in Wakefield, Quebec. For the little village of Wakefield, this is a rather large craft fair, with over 70 of the finest artisans from all in excess of the Gatineau Hills and the Ottawa area. Santa Claus usually drops by in the course of the weekend and tends to make a specific check out in the course of Ski Vorlage's buffet breakfast on Sunday early morning (9 – 11 am) and stays afterwards to just take images. I don't really see Advent Conspiracy and your approach as dicotomous (how do you spell that???). Do you think it bugs you that some of these ideas have been institutionalized? I could understand that, though I'm glad it's organized because it makes people like me get my rear in gear on things I believe in but have been lame about acting on. To me AC and your approach seem like the same thing, or like two sides of the same coin. I was really excited about the Christmas craft fair yesterday, but there was never a moment where I thought, “I'm going to ONLY give hand-made presents or charitable donations for Christmas this year.” That WOULD be disappointing and impractical and self-righteous. But if a home-made gift isn't too time-consuming (and many of the projects I learned about were more cheap, quick and easy than I expected), and if it's made with love and isn't totally lame (like a crocheted Kleenex box holder), I think a not-store-bought gift can be quite wonderful. (Funny that I'm saying this to someone who has given me so many awesome homemade gifts!) One thing I really loved about the craft fair was the spirit of sharing, creativity and utter joy. I sat down at my craft booth and started making a cardboard journal and collage and it made me SO happy. It gave me such peace to be creative away from a computer. And everyone was sharing ideas and materials, which led to sharing non-crafty tips like, “Hey, there's a great list-serve you should check out,” or “Did you know about such-and-such non-profit/band/coffee house?” I definitely understand the need to get stuff done and save time and money, especially with three kids running around. And my experience has shown me that trying to be TOO do-gooder-ish at Christmas can give a message that's the opposite of what you're going for. But I think a few homemade gifts thrown in with some thoughtful donations and the usual store-bought gifts will help me (personally) appreciate the season in a way that I've really been craving. Now it's your turn to say, “Whaa? You silly NF, you make no sense.” :) ]]>
