Oh cool! I hadn't heard of the Morita equivalence, I'll have to look into it some more.

I realized I made an error above though. In my “proof” of the fact that fg submodules of free modules are themselves free, I needed to use the fact that free modules are torsion-free, which is only true in general if the ring is a domain already. So I guess I have to think more about whether or not there's a workaround…
